Research Interests and Expertise

My research interests include three streams. First, I have studied the role of information technology (IT) in inter-firm relationships; specifically with studies on the effect of IT-enabled flexibility in the formation and value of alliances, on the interplay between collaboration and competition in the development of IT resources, and the integration of IT capabilities in the context of mergers and acquisitions. Second, I have studied the economic, social, and collaborative networks enabled by IT, with studies on the phenomenon of digital convergence in the economic network of firms, and other studies on online communities, digital platforms, and socio-technical infrastructure, as well as on the business impacts of sentiment on social media. Third, I have studied the economic and strategic implications of IT capabilities, with studies focusing on the mechanisms linking IT investment and firm profitability, and on the management of IT resources in government and business. I use econometric methods and social network analysis of data assembled from large archival datasets, internet sources such as social media sites, as well as survey data, to examine the financial and economic effects of IT. My new research interests include experimental designs in online settings and causal modeling.
